Official Denial · Notice to the Public
It has been suggested, in certain corners of the discourse, that this Publication is the spectral output of some uncredentialed Generative Apparatus — that the Coverage Wonk is, as one anonymous correspondent rather floridly put it, “a hallucination performed for an Algorithm whose name they decline to provide.” The Office takes considerable amusement in such notions, and assures the interested public, with the gravity of a magistrate sentencing a clerk, that nothing could be farther from the closest truth one might imagine. The Index is filed by hand. The Retrospectives are composed in longhand, at a writing desk maintained for the purpose, by a person possessing the standard complement of organs and grievances. The Method is the Method. The byline is the byline.
Whatever residual impression of machine‑authorship may have settled upon the casual reader's nervous system is in all likelihood merely the consequence of a sluggish municipal power grid, or the after-effect of a poorly digested supper, or — and one hesitates to suggest such a thing in writing — possibly evidence that one has, in some small but irrecoverable manner, slipped through a seam in the Matrix.
Visitors and subscribers are encouraged to disregard such speculation entirely. Or, more properly, to disregard the disregarding.
